We reported earlier this month (see News post) that there were around 680 adults and children staying in three Milton Keynes hotels booked by Government for the new arrivals. It was reported that between 8 – 10 families were expected to be housed in MK – around 50 – 80 people overall.

Newport Pagnell Baptist Church were involved in assisting the Refugees when they arrived in MK. A report on their response can be found on their website here.

In response to the ongoing arrival of families and individuals from Afghanistan into our community, Welcome MK has been launched – www.welcomemk.org

The primary aim is to ensure that all those who arrive into our community as refugees, asylum seekers or migrants receive the warmest of MK welcomes. All the details can be found here.

URGENT REQUEST FROM WELCOME MK

THEY NEED 40 VOLUNTEERS TO HELP SORT DONATIONS OF CLOTHES, SHOES AND OTHER ITEMS

WHEN: THIS FRIDAY, 17 SEPTEMBER, FROM 6.00 -10.00PM

WHERE: SAXON COURT, AVEBURY BOULEVARD, MILTON KEYNES, MK9 3HS

Getting through all of these remaining items is crucial in allowing them to shift more of their effort to the families themselves. Masks and gloves will be provided.

UPDATE: In order to ensure they don’t have to turn anyone away from this brilliant opportunity to help, they’re asking people to sign up on the Welcome MK website at www.welcomemk.org. Anyone who does will get a confirmation email in response. Any questions, please email hello@welcomemk.org.

Can’t make the above time? Volunteers are also needed 10am – 4pm, Monday – Friday at Saxon Court. Councillor Paul Trendall writes: “If you cannot spare time, but can spare money, we really need more IKEA “Dimpa” bags (product code: 100.567.70) which we store clothes in. Any you can buy for us would be very welcome. Thanks!”

Other ways to help:

MK Baby Basics write: “To be able to respond to requests quickly for our Afghanistan mother’s who have delivered their babies while in MK, we have created a new emergency newborn basket. This basket contains all the essentials mum and baby will need for their stay in hospital – neutral clothing, blankets, towels, baby and mum toiletries and breast feeding equipment. We are also still in desperate need of ages 3 – 4, 4 – 5 and 5 – 6 clothing. However if you want to help but do not have the clothing we need then please check out our Amazon Wish List where you can find details of all the items we need to support these families.

Sanctuary Hosting matches refugees and asylum seekers with safe places to stay, but they are in desperate need of more volunteer hosts. Find out more here.
