It is with sadness we inform you of the death of Rev Gordon Simmonds on 19th February. Gordon was the Methodist Superintendent in MK from the late 1970s to the early 1980s and played a significant role in the development of ecumenism in Milton Keynes.

He was a great supporter of all the fledgling social action projects that were just starting here at the time, especially the MK Christian Foundation. Gordon had a real heart for Ecumenism and was one of the people who ‘got’ and understood how LEPs could work.

Always respectful of the particular needs and gifts of each denomination, Gordon’s reaction to any opportunity was ‘How can we enable that to happen?’  He was also very supportive of anyone looking for opportunities to serve the work of the Church, often noticing latent possibilities in unlikely places.

One of his many other talents was procuring funding for new things like building the Trinity Centre on Fishermead. And he was also very involved in Hugh Cross becoming Milton Keynes first Ecumenical Moderator.

With thanks to Ruth Iley and Wendy Carey for their memories of Gordon.

Gordon’s funeral will be held on Wednesday 3rd March at Accrington Crematorium.

We send our thoughts and prayers to Gordon’s family.
